A semi-abstract landscape painting, inspired by a dramatic autumn afternoon—cold and wild and windy—as the light left the sky on the journey over the moors to Manchester.
The painting, featuring swooping gestural marks in blues, siennas, ochres and yellows, evolved quickly from thin, layered washes of oil paint on the canvas, allowing the pigments, solvent and gravity to help with the mixing process on the surface of the work. Making decisions about whether to intervene is key in this process. I let passages of moving paint remain, or wipe and blend other areas, sometimes manipulating the angle of the canvas so the runs move or halt—letting them do their thing.
Framed in a contemporary black wood tray frame and ready to hang.
Finished with a low-sheen varnish for protection.
