Inspiration:

There's a rowan tree in my Dad's garden that's seen my whole life. He's in his eighties now, and that tree has been there as long as I can remember. I must have passed it thousands of times—but at the end of one long autumn day, I tipped my head back and stood under it properly for the first time. A cool breeze set the upper branches swaying, the rhythm of whispering burnt orange and vermilion leaves hypnotic. The low sun flickered through them and the patch of ground I stood on felt completely still.

The name came from T.S. Eliot's Burnt Norton—a meditation on time, memory, and what it means to be fully present while the world moves on around you. Eliot contemplates the interconnectedness of past, present, and future—and that idea of a still centre point in a turning world is exactly what I'd felt under that tree.

The painting was fast and intuitive in the early stages, with slow and considered details in the later layers. The filtered shapes of autumn light, the scarlet-gold rowan leaves—the history of the work is all there in the surface. 

This is a painting about savouring the moment when the world slows down. It would suit a reading corner or cosy snug vignette—somewhere you actually pause. The colours—deep scarlet-orange, glowing gold and warm grey-blue—resonate differently throughout the day and the seasons, changing with the light.

Shipping:

Each painting is shipped from my studio in Yorkshire within 5-7 days of the purchase date if already framed. Please allow up to 2 weeks for framing.

Each artwork is signed (oils are varnished), and prepared for safe shipment. Your artwork will then be boxed or crated to ensure it arrives with you in perfect condition. All originals are securely dispatched by courier, tracked and insured, or if you are local to West Yorkshire, UK, I can deliver by hand by arrangement.

Delivery:

Once your order has been processed, I will be in touch within 48hrs to arrange a convenient delivery date.

Returns:

Artworks can be returned (insured) providing they are undamaged and in all of the original packaging.

If you would like to return a purchase, or in the unfortunate event your purchase arrives damaged, please follow the steps on the How to Return Artworks page.

I do not accept returns on sale/discounted items, bespoke framed artwork, or any artwork that is made to commission or personalised in any way.

Packaging

Original artwork is signed (sometimes on the reverse), wrapped in oil-resistant glassine paper (or tissue if a non-oil based media), and layers of protective packaging, before being boxed. Corners are protected and the package is marked fragile so that it arrives in pristine condition ready for you to hang.

Each original includes a Certificate of Authenticity, signed by the artist for provenance.

About Julia Brown


Julia Brown is a UK-based painter creating quiet, immersive works rooted in light, material process and the natural world. Her paintings invite stillness, reflection, and sensory connection.

Her work explores the emotional experience of place—especially the fleeting beauty of Komorebi—the Japanese concept of sunlight filtering through trees.

She exhibits regularly across the UK, has been shortlisted for the New Light Art Prize and the Cooper Prize, and teaches at North Light Art School in West Yorkshire.
