Mixed media (watercolour & pastel) on handmade Lokta paper, 2021

21.5  x 26 cm | 8.5 x 10.25 in approx.

Framed Dimensions: 43.2 × 48.3 × 3.5 cm | 17.5 x 19.25 x 1.25 in

Signed on reverse.

Within the landscape are all these snapshot ‘views-within-views’. Slightly abstract compositions that—removed from the big artwork and scaled down into smaller pieces—play with shapes and colours, rather than trying to create some grand gesture of open space and distance.

This beautiful Nepalese Lokta paper is in equal measures gossamer-like and strong. It has a translucency that makes working with watercolour on it a challenge, plus a subtle texture of fibres and organic material. I find this reminiscent of the textures in the moorlands and fields of the subject matter, so it adds a new dimension to the finished piece.

This artwork is also being sold through #Artist Support Pledge on Instagram.

Please note: this painting has rough, uneven edges that give it its own particular character.

Note on framing: the painting will be float mounted with a neutral white conservation mountboard and framed in a slim, contemporary natural oak frame.
