Everything felt a bit too much that day—grey sky, concrete underfoot, heavy bones—until I spotted a singular, defiant red maple tree glowing through the murk. As I felt compelled to stand under the canopy and breathe, light broke into fragments through the leaves, a glorious mess of red and gold became a sanctuary, and for a minute everything slowed down.

This is that moment. A tiny sanctuary, caught in oils.

It’s a painting made backwards. Started with expressive energy—charcoal doodles, layers of scraped and brushed paint, it slowly resolved into something more meditative that feels like the memory of standing under that tree.

Burnt orange, crimson, soft mossy greens and deep shadows are found amongst the various layers. Hints of teal flicker against the warmth for balance. It's lively, yet somehow grounding when you take the time to absorb it.

Perfect for a place where you sit and pause—that place where you go to decompress and remember to breathe.

This piece is from a body of work exploring the Japanese concept of 'Komorebi' (the feeling and atmosphere of light filtering through trees).

One of a collection of four.
